Former MotoGP Star Aleix Espargaro Shines at Inaugural UCI 114 Gravel Race
Espargaro showcased his versatility and competitive spirit by finishing 7th in the highly anticipated UCI 114 Gravel Race, which took place over the weekend
The event, a thrilling new addition to the UCI Gravel series, connected the historic cities of Elvas in Portugal and Badajoz in Spain, marking a significant milestone in international gravel racing.
The race featured a challenging 123km course with an elevation gain of 864 meters, including major climbs in the middle of the course. Riders began their journey on Portuguese soil, traversing the first 20km before crossing into Spain to complete a 100 km loop. The final 30km of the route was characterized by flat terrain, allowing competitors to push their limits and showcase their endurance.
A total of 515 riders from 30 countries participated, bringing together a diverse field of both seasoned gravel specialists and newcomers. Among the elite competitors were renowned gravel cyclists such as Annabel Fisher, Lucia Gonzalez, Freddy Ovett, Jose Maria, and Mario Fernandez, all vying for top honors in this inaugural event.
Espargaro, who is better known for his achievements in motorcycle racing, expressed his excitement and joy after completing the race. "Riding is fun! Despite having little technique with the gravel bike and premiering the Checkmate [Trek gravel bike] yesterday, I enjoyed it a lot and I have good legs to finish seventh overall in my first World Cup and qualify for the Gravel World Championship," he stated. His impressive performance not only highlights his adaptability as an athlete but also his passion for cycling beyond the racetrack.
The UCI 114 Gravel Race has become a staple in the gravel racing calendar, attracting more participants and spectators in it's four editions. Its unique cross-border format offers a thrilling experience for both competitors and fans, celebrating the spirit of cycling in a picturesque setting.
As gravel racing continues to grow in popularity, athletes like Espargaro are helping to elevate the sport, inspiring a new generation of cyclists to explore the joys of off-road racing.
The event serves as a testament to the expanding horizons of competitive un-road cycling, blending adventure, endurance, and camaraderie among riders from around the globe.
