Scheurs and Klaris fastest at UCI Worthersee Gravel, Securing Spots for 2025 World Championships
In a thrilling display of endurance and strategy, Magnus Bak Klaris of Denmark (PAS RACING) and Geerike Schreurs of the Netherlands (SD WORX-PROTIME) emerged victorious at the sold-out UCI Gravel World Series race held in Worthersee, Austria, on Sunday
Both riders not only claimed top honors but also secured coveted starting bibs for the highly anticipated 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships. The sold-out Woerthersee Gravel Race in Austria saw 2000 riders tackle a new 140km course (two laps of 70km)
The race, which spanned a grueling 136 kilometers through Austria's renowned gravel terrain, showcased the athletes' resilience and tactical prowess. Klaris, 29, executed a masterful solo effort, crossing the finish line with arms raised in triumph at a time of 3:38:16. He was closely followed by Switzerland's Felix Stehli, who clocked in at 3:38:57, and Austria's newly crowned Gravel National Champion, Lukas Posterberger, who finished in 3:40:53.
For the women's category, the 35-year-old Scheurs demonstrated her strength and determination, pulling away in the final kilometer to clinch victory with a time of 4:32:21. Just ten seconds later, Poland's Karolina Migon and Germany's Carolin Schiff engaged in a fierce sprint for the remaining podium spot, with Migon ultimately prevailing.
The event also featured a shorter 84-kilometer medio length race tailored for older age groups. Arno Kaspret (X TEAM ZELTWEG) claimed the men's title in the M60-64 category, while Marijke De Smedt (VANOMOBIL) took the women's title in the W50-54 category, showcasing the depth of talent across all age divisions.
Riders who finished in the top 25% of their respective UCI age/gender categories have qualified for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships, tentatively scheduled for October at a location to be announced. This qualification marks a significant achievement for the athletes, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating showdown on the world stage.
