Aguirre and Schmidt Triumph at Monaco Gravel
In a spectacular display of grit and determination, Mads Wurtz Schmidt and Morgan Aguirre of PAS RACING claimed solo victories at the prestigious Monaco Gravel event, solidifying their positions for the upcoming 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships
Despite a modest field of around 500 participants, both athletes showcased their exceptional talent and endurance on the challenging 120-kilometer course.
The race commenced from the picturesque village of Peille, featuring a grueling ascent that totaled 2,400 meters of climbing. Schmidt, a 31-year-old former Danish WorldTour pro, demonstrated his prowess by finishing the race in a remarkable time of 3:51:32, nearly five minutes ahead of his closest competitor. Luka Postlberger crossed the finish line in 3:55:15, followed closely by 2023 GFNY World Champion Mattia Gaffuri, who completed the course in 3:58:24.
“This victory is incredibly meaningful to me,” said Schmidt. “The Monaco Gravel course is not only beautiful but also incredibly challenging. To come out on top and secure my second UCI Gravel World Series win this season is a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into training.”
On the women’s side, Aguirre dominated the field with a stunning performance, finishing the race in 4:35:55. The 31-year-old pro gravel racer, who now resides in Spain, secured her victory with a five-minute lead over her nearest rival, Nicole Frain, who clocked in at 4:40:53. Caroline Schiff rounded out the podium with a time of 4:43:59.
“I’m thrilled to have won in Monaco,” Aguirre stated. “The support from the crowd and my team made this experience unforgettable. Qualifying for the UCI Gravel World Championships is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to compete on the international stage.”
Both Schmidt and Aguirre's outstanding performances not only earned them individual accolades but also secured their spots for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships, set to take place in the Netherlands next October. Riders finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualified for this prestigious event, further underscoring the significance of their victories.
As the gravel racing scene continues to gain momentum, events like the Monaco Gravel play a crucial role in showcasing the talent and dedication of cyclists worldwide. With the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships on the horizon, all eyes will be on Schmidt and Aguirre as they prepare to represent their team and country on the global stage.
