The name of our event pays tribute to Apo Lazaridès, a French rider of Greek origin who wore the colors of ES Cannes and lived on the Côte d'Azur.

A brilliant climber and devoted teammate of René Vietto, he won the "Petit Tour de France" in 1946, at the end of the war. This was a "shortened" Tour (in five stages from Monaco to Paris) that heralded the return of the "real" Tour de France in 1947.

In 1948, he even became vice-World Champion behind the legendary Flemish rider "Brieck" Schotte.

His brother Lucien was also a professional rider and won the Dauphiné Libéré Criterium.
