RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state.  Heading into its 41st year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest recreational bicycle touring event in the world.  Des Moines Register Media has been the title sponsor of RAGBRAI since 1973.

A return to small-town Iowa is in store for more than 10,000 riders rolling across the state in RAGBRAI’s 42nd year in 2014. The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa — the world’s oldest, largest and longest tour of its kind — begins this year for the first time in Rock Valley and ends 418 miles later in Guttenberg. Along the way, riders will stop overnight in Okoboji, Emmetsburg, Forest City, Mason City, Waverly and Independence.

The average seven-day total mileage for RAGBRAI is 468 miles, while the daily mileage averages 67 miles. There is an optional loop (called the Karras Loop) on one day each year for cyclists wanting the challenge of riding a full century.

The event is seven days of riding through the Iowa countryside. Regardless of what you may think, Iowa is not necessarily flat.  The route begins somewhere along Iowa’s western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on the Mississippi River.

The complete week of daily route maps, with mileage between pass-through towns and other information, will be available at campground Information Centers as well as at the RAGBRAI’s Information and Merchandise Trailers in downtown and in the main campground of each overnight stop.  The route for the day is published each morning in The Des Moines Register.  The route is not closed to vehicular traffic but, by publishing the maps, drivers can plan to use other highways while the riders are in the area.
